Frank Caprio, the Rhode Island judge who became a global internet sensation for blending compassion with justice in minor traffic cases, has died at the age of 88. His family announced on Wednesday that he passed away following a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer.

Only hours before news of his death, Caprio appeared in a heartfelt video thanking fans for their prayers. "Unfortunately I've had a setback, I'm back in the hospital now and I'm coming to you again asking you to remember me in your prayers once more," he said in the post.

A family statement remembered him as more than just a jurist: “He will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. His legacy lives on in the countless acts of kindness he inspired. In his honor, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world — just as he did every day.”

From Providence courtroom to viral fame

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Caprio spent more than three decades as a municipal court judge. His unique approach—firm but always empathetic—came to wider attention through ‘Caught in Providence’, a reality court show that aired nationally between 2018 and 2020. The programme, which received multiple Daytime Emmy nominations, showcased his philosophy that fairness and humanity must be central to justice.

Clips from the show, particularly those involving light-hearted exchanges and moments of compassion, spread widely on social media, earning him the nickname “America’s Nicest Judge.”

Public battle with illness

In December 2023, just after celebrating his 87th birthday, Caprio revealed through an emotional social media message that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He kept the public updated throughout his treatment journey, candidly sharing both hopeful milestones and setbacks. In recent weeks, he had asked followers once again to keep him in their prayers.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee paid tribute to Caprio, calling him a “true Rhode Island treasure” and ordering flags across the state to be lowered to half-staff in his honour.

Viral moments from Judge Caprio’s court

Over the years, his courtroom delivered memorable instances that reflected his signature style of justice:

I’m not going to waste your time, I’m guilty
An elderly defendant immediately confessed to being guilty to save time. Caprio, with a playful twist, responded, “No—I just got lucky,” before reducing her fines and offering lenient payment terms.

The power of a smile
A student contesting a parking fine impressed Caprio with her genuine smile. He dismissed her case outright, remarking, “One thing you can’t fake is a smile.”

Compassion for a 96-year-old speeding dad
When a 96-year-old man explained he was driving slowly to take his disabled son for blood work, Caprio dismissed the ticket and commended his dedication as a father.

Help from India
In one widely shared episode, Caprio told the story of a man from Bangalore who had sent him $100 to assist someone in need. When a young mother, unaware she needed to appear in court, explained she had already paid her ticket online, Caprio applied the donated $100 to her case and reinstated her licence, sparing her the bureaucratic hassle of contesting it.

Beyond the bench, Caprio was a devoted family man—cherished as a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His courtroom, however, became a space where fairness and kindness defined justice, leaving behind a legacy admired far beyond Rhode Island.
