Kathmandu: Nepal has joined a growing chorus of South Asian nations in formally reaffirming its commitment to the "One China" principle, a move that aligns Kathmandu with neighbours Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh amid heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

In a statement released Sunday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a government spokesperson declared that Nepal recognises the People's Republic of China as the "sole legal government representing the whole of China" and described Taiwan as an "inalienable part of China’s territory."

The announcement follows a series of high-level diplomatic celebrations in 2025 marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Kathmandu and Beijing. It also comes as China recently concluded large-scale military exercises, code-named "Justice Mission 2025," around Taiwan, drills that Beijing described as a warning to "separatist forces."
