Tianjin: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on August 30, 2025, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China. During the bilateral meeting, PM Modi formally invited President Xi to the BRICS Summit scheduled to be hosted by India in 2026.

Both leaders acknowledged positive progress in bilateral relations since their last meeting in Kazan in October 2024. They reaffirmed that India and China are development partners and not rivals, emphasising the need to maintain peace and tranquillity along their border areas to support continued bilateral development. The leaders expressed commitment to a fair and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary issue, noting recent successful disengagements and ongoing talks between their special representatives.

Discussions also covered enhancing people-to-people connections by expanding direct flights and facilitating visas, including resuming the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra pilgrimage. On economic ties, both sides recognised their role in stabilising global trade and stressed the importance of expanding bilateral trade and investment while addressing trade imbalances.

PM Modi highlighted that India-China relations should not be viewed through the lens of any third country and reiterated both countries’ pursuit of strategic autonomy. Common ground on regional and global issues, including combating terrorism and promoting fair trade on multilateral platforms, was underscored.

Additionally, PM Modi held a meeting with Cai Qi, member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China, to discuss the bilateral relationship's future direction and seek support for the agenda set by the two leaders.
