Mexico City: At least seven people were killed when a small aircraft crashed while attempting an emergency landing in central Mexico on Monday, authorities said.

The privately owned jet came down in San Mateo Atenco, an industrial area around five kilometres from Toluca airport and about 50 kilometres west of Mexico City. The aircraft had departed from Acapulco on Mexico’s Pacific coast.

Mexico State’s Civil Protection coordinator, Adrián Hernández, said the plane was carrying eight passengers and two crew members. Several hours after the crash, however, only seven bodies had been recovered.

According to Hernández, the aircraft appeared to have been trying to land on a nearby football pitch but instead struck the metal roof of a business premises, triggering a large fire. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

San Mateo Atenco’s mayor, Ana Muñiz, told Milenio Television that the blaze forced the evacuation of about 130 people from the surrounding area.
