New Delhi: Tech giant Meta is set to lay off approximately 3,000 employees, which accounts for around 5 percent of its total workforce, according to a leaked internal memo. The news, reported on Sunday, reveals that the company’s Vice President of Human Resources, Janelle Gale, shared the memo on Meta’s internal Workplace forum.
The memo details the process for affected employees, stating that they will receive an email on Monday morning informing them about their job status. For some international employees, the layoff process will begin on Sunday at 2:30 am IST.
In the US, employees will be notified at 6:30 pm IST on Monday. Upon receiving the email, employees will lose access to company systems within an hour. The email will also include information on severance packages.
Acknowledging the impact
Gale acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, especially for teams who will be losing a manager or a colleague. She expressed empathy for those affected, noting that the impact would be significant within the teams.
Remote work options for affected employees
Meta offices will remain open, but employees who prefer to work remotely on Monday can choose to do so. Since Meta follows a hybrid work model, which requires employees to be in the office for three days a week, working from home on Monday will still count as an in-person workday.
Potential for future hiring
The company has not disclosed the names of those being laid off. Some of the roles affected by the layoffs may be refilled in the future, although there is no set timeline for this. Employees whose managers are among those laid off will be reassigned new reporting heads.
Zuckerberg's warning and tech industry job cuts
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had previously hinted at job cuts, indicating that the company was raising performance standards. Typically, Meta phases out low performers over a year; however, this round of layoffs is occurring on a much larger scale, based on recent performance reviews.
The trend of job cuts in the tech industry continues, with companies focusing on efficiency and cost-cutting measures. Recently, Amazon laid off dozens of employees, while Salesforce cut around 1,000 jobs earlier this year.
