The Saudi-led military coalition battling Yemen's Houthis stated on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, that it intercepted a rebel drone heading towards Mecca, the holiest city in Islam. However, a Houthi official quickly rejected the report, denying any target on the holy site.

According to the coalition, Saudi air defense forces destroyed the hostile drone before it entered protected airspace.

Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki posted a statement on X: "The Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces intercepted and destroyed a hostile drone launched by the Terrorist Houthi Militia before it entered the Prohibited Airspace Area of the Holy City of 'Makkah Al-Mukarramah'".

Netizens also shared purported visuals on social media following the reported interception. The authenticity and origin of the visuals could not be independently established.

Rebels reject Saudi claims

The Houthis denied sending any drone towards Mecca. Hazem al-Assad, a politburo member of the Houthi group, wrote on X: "The claims about targeting Mecca are a worn-out lie that has been used before and no longer fools anyone".

Despite the rebel group's denial, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) issued a statement on Wednesday condemning what it called a heinous attack. The group also cited ongoing strikes against Saudi territory.

The organisation posted on X: "The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemns the heinous attacks carried out by the Houthi group against the city of Makkah and the Madinah region, as well as its ongoing aggression against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia".

Significance of the holy city

Mecca is regarded as the holiest city in Islam. It is traditionally recognised as the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and is home to the Kaaba at the centre of the Grand Mosque, Islam's most important place of worship.

The city is the capital of Mecca Province in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia. It lies in a narrow valley about 70 kilometres inland from Jeddah on the Red Sea. 

It may be noted that Saudi Arabia has largely been on its own in confronting the Iranian-backed rebels, who rapidly captured more territory in Yemen over the past week and strengthened their ability to choke off Saudi oil exports out of the Red Sea.
