Louvre Museum in Paris closed Monday after a daring jewel heist
Paris: The world-famous museum in Paris will remain closed on Monday, following a dramatic jewels heist. Museum management confirmed the closure, explaining that visitors with tickets for Monday will be reimbursed because of “exceptional circumstances.”
“The museum is closed for the whole day,” one member of staff told visitors.

On Sunday, thieves broke into the Louvre and made off with crown jewels from the museum’s Apollo Gallery. Visitors queued in the pyramid courtyard and entrance gallery just before the announcement.
One American tourist, Carol Fuchs, who had been standing in line for more than three-quarters of an hour, described the scene: “The audacity, coming through a window. I feel so sorry for whoever was on guard in that room.” She added, “Will they ever be found? I doubt it. I think it’s long gone.”
What items were stolen
According to official sources, eight pieces of 19th-century French crown jewellery were stolen in only four to seven minutes. The thieves used a truck, a basket lift and power tools, and fled on motorbikes. One crown, worn by Empress Eugénie, was found broken outside the museum.
The culture and interior ministries described the haul as of “inestimable heritage value.”

The Louvre is closed into Monday as investigators inspect the scene and preserve evidence. The closure notice cited “exceptional reasons.”
