A lottery jackpot may seem like a blessing, but for one man in Japan, secret wealth came with guilt, loneliness and emotional collapse.

Winning the lottery is often viewed as a once-in-a-lifetime blessing, but for a 66-year-old man in Japan, sudden wealth led to emotional turmoil instead of happiness. The man won 600 million yen (approximately USD 3.8 million / ₹31.6 crore) in a lottery draw, yet decided to hide the windfall from his wife, a decision that quickly unravelled his peace of mind.
According to a report by the 'South China Morning Post (SCMP)', citing Japanese outlet The Gold Online, the man, identified only as “S”, immediately splurged the prize money on luxury purchases. He reportedly bought expensive cars, booked high-end resorts and travelled across Japan, living a lavish lifestyle far removed from his simple family life.
"This does not feel real. The number is so huge, I am even a bit scared," he reflected after claiming the jackpot. "I heard the odds of winning are lower than being struck by lightning. This is just an experience in my life."
Before the win, the retired manufacturing employee lived on a combined pension of around USD 2,000 per month with his wife, and the couple had savings worth only USD 174,000.
His wife, described as extremely frugal, did not allow spending on “luxuries”, even banning beer at home and insisting they continue using their old car. To avoid suspicion, S told her he had won just USD 32,000, claiming the money was to be used for home renovations.
Despite the thrill of sudden wealth, the secrecy began to affect him deeply. He shared that guilt and isolation grew stronger as he remembered his father’s lonely death following divorce and bankruptcy. The fear of repeating that family tragedy pushed him to seek professional help.
He eventually consulted a financial planner and invested nearly USD 3.2 million of the remaining winnings into insurance policies, naming his wife and children as beneficiaries, effectively securing their future without revealing the truth of his past spending.
"If this money had been earned through my own efforts, I would be proud of it. But wealth that comes without effort brings up unpleasant memories and shakes my life," he said.
The unlikely story of a lottery jackpot triggering stress, guilt and family conflict has since gone viral across Japanese social media, sparking discussions about sudden wealth syndrome, financial secrecy in marriages and the emotional challenges tied to unexpected fortune.
