Kuwait/ US: Loud explosions echoed across Kuwait on Wednesday as the country's air defence networks swung into action to intercept a wave of incoming aerial threats. The military has confirmed that tactical units engaged hostile targets following reports of blasts across multiple parts of the country, marking a sharp spike in regional volatility.

In an official communique, the Kuwaiti Army’s General Staff moved to reassure the public. "Kuwaiti air defenses are currently confronting hostile missile and drone attacks. The General Staff of the Army notes that if explosion sounds are heard, they are the result of air defense systems intercepting the hostile attacks," the military command announced.

Safety warnings and public order

The situation on the ground remains tense. Following the engagements, the military issued an urgent advisory warning citizens and foreign residents, including the significant Indian expatriate community, not to handle any unidentifiable debris or shrapnel found on the ground.

Ministry of Defence spokesperson Colonel Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi urged everyone to stay vigilant. He requested that any "anomalous debris" be reported immediately via the 112 hotline. Colonel Al-Otaibi also cautioned against the spread of rumours, asking the public to verify information only through official channels. "The General Staff of the Army calls on everyone to cooperate and adhere to the issued guidelines to preserve the security and safety of all," the leadership stated.

The view from Washington

The United States military has confirmed that it also played a central role in the day’s events. US Central Command (Centcom) said that it had "successfully defeated" a series of Iranian missile and drone attacks in the Gulf.

According to Centcom, the Iranian offensive was broad but ultimately failed to hit its intended targets. "Iran launched several ballistic missiles toward regional neighbors; however, all failed to hit their intended targets," the statement read.

Providing specific details, the US military said two missiles fired at Kuwait either fell short or broke apart in the air, while three missiles aimed at Bahrain were intercepted by a combination of US and Bahraini air defence forces.

The threat was not limited to land targets. The US military also shot down three attack drones launched by Iran towards "civilian mariners that were rightfully transiting regional waters".

Iran claims retaliation

From Tehran, the narrative was one of direct confrontation. Iran's state-controlled broadcaster, IRIB, asserted that the strikes were a deliberate response to Western military movements.

The broadcaster claimed that American bases in Kuwait were the specific targets. According to the IRIB narrative, the assault was launched "following the hostile actions of the U.S. in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and Qeshm Island, American bases in Kuwait were hit".

US strikes back on Qeshm Island

The American response went beyond interception. The US military confirmed it conducted self-defence strikes on Qeshm Island, a strategic location in the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is a vital artery for the world's oil and gas supplies and has been largely blocked by Tehran since late February.

Centcom confirmed the strikes targeted an "Iranian military ground control station" on the island. Despite the intensity of the exchange, the US military reported that no American personnel were injured during the operations.

The latest cross-border escalation comes amid what sources describe as rapidly deteriorating regional security and widening friction between US forces and Iran.
