Dakar, Senegal: Khaby Lame, the world’s most-followed TikTok personality, has been appointed as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, a role that will allow him to advocate for children’s rights on a global scale. The 24-year-old influencer, known for his silent yet expressive videos, addressed the youth in his native Senegal during the appointment ceremony on Friday, delivering a powerful message of hope and perseverance.
From struggles to stardom
Born in Senegal and raised in Italy, Lame’s journey to global fame was anything but easy. He grew up fearing poverty, struggled to find direction in school, and lost his factory job during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, what seemed like a setback became an opportunity. He turned to TikTok, creating reaction videos that captivated millions worldwide with their simplicity and humour. Today, he boasts over 162 million followers, making him the most popular TikTok creator in the world.
Reflecting on his past, Lame expressed gratitude for the new role with UNICEF. “From my own experience as a child fearing poverty, struggling to find my passion at school, and losing my job during the COVID-19 pandemic, to finding my place and calling in the world, I know that all children can thrive when they are given a chance and opportunity,” he said.
Inspiring the youth of Senegal
Senegal, where Lame was born, has long been a country where young people face economic hardships, with over 60% of the population under 25 and the majority working informal jobs. Many are forced to seek opportunities abroad, often risking their lives on dangerous migration routes.
During his visit to Senegal, Lame met children and young changemakers working to improve their communities. His message to them was simple yet powerful: “Dream big. Try and do your best to accomplish your dreams, even though there are people telling you that you cannot reach them.”
Despite spending most of his life in Italy, Lame only received Italian citizenship at the age of 20. Yet, he embraces both his Senegalese and Italian heritage. “My blood is from Senegal, but I feel Senegalese and Italian at the same time,” he said.
As a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, Lame hopes to use his global influence to shed light on children’s rights and struggles across the world. “Being a UNICEF ambassador will allow me to see all the world and its problems,” he said, expressing his commitment to making a difference.
Lame's appointment to UNICEF came at the end of a four-day visit to Senegal where he met children and young people who are driving positive change in their communities. AP
