London: Authorities reported that multiple people were shot on Saturday along Interstate 75 in a rural part of southeastern Kentucky. The Laurel County Sheriff's Office described the incident on Facebook as an "active shooter situation" with “numerous persons” shot near the highway.

London Mayor Randall Weddle stated in a video message that seven individuals were injured, but not all were from gunfire; some were hurt in a vehicle accident. "There are no deceased at this time. No one was killed from this, thankfully, but we ask that you continue to pray,” Weddle said.

Saint Joseph London hospital officials confirmed they were treating several patients, according to LEX 18, noting that those admitted had minor injuries.

The sheriff’s office announced that a “Person of Interest” had been identified in connection with the shooting and warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous. The suspect was identified as Joseph A. Couch, a 32-year-old white male, and authorities urged anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact the county's 911 center.

Local state lawmakers urged Laurel County residents to stay indoors as law enforcement continued to search for the shooter. “Without a doubt, this is an act of senseless violence that does not reflect the values of this community, our Commonwealth, or its people,” they said in a statement.

The Mount Vernon Fire Department reported a “heavy presence of police and fire personnel” on the scene, working to address the situation. They advised drivers to avoid I-75 and US 25. The interstate, which had been closed nine miles north of London, was later reopened according to the sheriff’s office.

Governor Andy Beshear posted on social platform X, stating, “I am receiving initial reports from the Kentucky State Police and our Office of Homeland Security — together we are actively monitoring the situation and offering support in any way possible. Please pray for everyone involved.” He added that more details would be provided as they became available.
