Washington DC: Jill Biden, the First Lady of the United States, received a special gift from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023 -- a 7.5-carat diamond valued at USD 20,000, the most expensive present any foreign leader gave to a member of the Biden family.

The diamond, which was retained for official use in the White House East Wing, far surpasses any other gifts received by the Bidens. Jill Biden also received a brooch from the Ukrainian ambassador worth USD 14,063 and a collection of gifts, including a bracelet, brooch, and photograph album worth USD 4,510 from the president and first lady of Egypt.

Other notable gifts to the Biden family

President Joe Biden also received high-value gifts in 2023. Notable presents included a commemorative photo album valued at USD 7,100 from South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, a USD 3,495 statue of Mongolian warriors from the Mongolian Prime Minister, and a USD 3,160 sterling silver tray from Israel’s president.

Federal law requires U.S. officials to declare gifts from foreign leaders worth more than USD 480. Many gifts, particularly expensive ones, are sent to the National Archives or placed on display. However, recipients can opt to purchase the gifts from the US government at market value, though this is rare for luxury items.

Gifts for CIA employees

Several CIA employees received lavish gifts, including luxury watches and jewelry. The total value of gifts reported and destroyed amounted to over USD 132,000. Notably, CIA Director William Burns received an USD 18,000 astrograph, which is being transferred to the General Services Administration.

Some CIA employees also reported receiving expensive items like an Omega Seamaster watch worth USD 11,000 and a women’s jewelry set from a Libyan jeweler valued at USD 30,000 -- both destroyed in compliance with agency protocols.

While foreign leaders often present lavish gifts, US officials must adhere to strict rules regarding their handling, often resulting in their destruction or transfer to government archives. The record-setting diamond from Prime Minister Modi to Jill Biden remains the standout gift of 2023.
