Japan's location on the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire means earthquakes are common, but strict building codes help minimize disaster.

Tokyo: A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of western Japan on Tuesday morning, according to the country’s meteorological office. No tsunami warnings were issued following the tremor.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the earthquake occurred at 10:18 a.m. local time (0118 GMT) with its epicentre located in Shimane Prefecture.
There were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries. Japan sits on the "Pacific Ring of Fire," an arc of intense seismic activity, and regularly experiences earthquakes, maintaining some of the world's strictest building codes to mitigate damage.
