Baghdad: The Iraqi government on Sunday declared a three-day period of national mourning following the confirmed death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as regional leaders expressed profound condemnation of the U.S.-Israeli strikes that decapitated the Islamic Republic’s leadership.
The announcement, carried by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), follows similar declarations from Tehran and regional allies. In a statement reflecting the deep religious and political ties between the two neighbouring nations, Baghdad characterised the assassination as a "blatant aggression" that overstepped all international legal frameworks.

“With great sadness and sorrow, we offer our condolences to the honorable Iranian people and the entire Islamic nation on the martyrdom of the scholar and mujahid, the Supreme Leader, His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Husseini al-Khamenei, whom we consider to be among the first of the family of the Prophet, as a result of a blatant aggression and a reprehensible act that violates all human and moral norms, and in clear violation of international laws and conventions,” said government spokesperson Bassem Al-Awadi. and the entire Islamic nation on the martyrdom of the scholar and mujahid, the Supreme Leader, His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Husseini al-Khamenei, whom we consider to be among the first of the family of the Prophet, as a result of a blatant aggression and a reprehensible act that violates all human and moral norms, and in clear violation of international laws and conventions,” said government spokesperson Bassem Al-Awadi.
