Dubai: Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Monday claimed it launched ballistic missile strikes targeting US military aircraft at Jordan's Aqaba airport, as fighting between Tehran and Washington intensified across the region.

In a statement carried by Iran's state broadcaster IRIB, the IRGC said it targeted US C-17 military transport aircraft and P-8 surveillance aircraft stationed at Aqaba airport, claiming that several of the aircraft were heavily damaged.

The IRGC also claimed that 20 hangars housing US forces at the Muwaffaq Salti (Al-Azraq) Air Base in Jordan were destroyed during the attack.

The claims could not be independently verified, and there was no immediate confirmation from US or Jordanian authorities.

The missile claims came as the United States launched another wave of airstrikes against Iran early Monday, hours after announcing the death of another American service member.

According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the latest military operations targeted Iranian military infrastructure following escalating attacks on US personnel and assets in the region.

Iran also escalated its warnings over maritime security in the Gulf.

In a separate statement, the IRGC claimed that two oil tankers had exploded and become immobilised after attempting to navigate what it described as an unsafe southern route through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Guards alleged that the vessels had been encouraged by the US military to use the passage.

Reuters said it could not immediately verify the incident. The IRGC did not identify the vessels, disclose their nationality or provide details on any casualties.

The Revolutionary Guards also issued a fresh warning over one of the world's busiest energy corridors.

"Not a 'single drop of oil and gas' will safely transit Hormuz while US actions continue," the IRGC said, signalling that Iran intends to maintain pressure on shipping through the strategic waterway.

The renewed threats come as commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has already been severely disrupted by weeks of escalating military exchanges between the United States and Iran.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said a vessel had been reported on fire about eight nautical miles northwest of Kumzar, Oman.

UKMTO said the cause of the fire had not been verified and advised vessels transiting the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity while authorities investigate.
