Paris: A viral video showing a group of Indian man chanting slogans such as ‘Jai Maharashtra’, ‘Jai Shiv Sena’ and ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ki Jai’ near a street performer in Paris has ignited widespread criticism on social media over public behaviour abroad.

The video, shot in the crowded Montmartre area, shows one man placing his arm around a mime performer — an artist using silent storytelling through body movements and facial expressions — while shouting slogans. Others in the group join in, despite the performer’s visible discomfort and repeated gestures to stop.

The incident has sparked debate about civic sense, respectful behaviour in public spaces, and whether displays of nationalism are appropriate while abroad.

At one point, a man is seen taking a photograph with the mime before loudly chanting slogans. The performer signals for him to stop, but the man continues with full energy, joined by others. The video also captures chants in praise of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, leading observers to speculate that some participants were supporters from Shinde’s home region of Thane.

The clip has drawn sharp reactions online. Writer Suraj Kumar Bauddh tweeted, “Indian tourists’ stupidity in Paris. They harassed a street performer who was peacefully performing his art. The artist tried to stop them from shouting slogans like Jai Maharashtra, Jai Shivaji and making reels with him, all without any respect for his space. Shameful!”

Other social media users called the behaviour “disgusting” and suggested severe consequences, with one commenting that the group “ignored the performer’s signals and completely disrespected his act.”
