Islamabad: Pakistan's jailed former prime minister Imran Khan has undergone a comprehensive medical evaluation following heightened concerns regarding his physical health, according to local media reports on Saturday.

Khan, 73, has remained incarcerated since his 2023 arrest and subsequent conviction in a corruption case. He is currently held at the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

Geo News, citing sources, reported that a specialist team from the government-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) conducted the former cricketer-turned-politician's medical assessment.

The medical evaluation encompassed a series of routine checks, including tests for blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and an eye examination.

A senior doctor from PIMS led the medical team, supported by healthcare personnel stationed at the Adiala Jail hospital facility, according to the report.

Khan has previously reported experiencing an eye condition and has been transferred to PIMS on several occasions for specialised medical care.

Supporters of the former leader contend that his health has declined owing to inadequate medical attention while in custody, an assertion firmly denied by prison officials.

The Supreme Court directed on 18 August that Khan be moved to a private hospital for treatment; however, he was instead conveyed to PIMS for diagnostic testing before being returned to prison.

Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has demanded his immediate transfer to the private Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for thorough medical evaluation and treatment. The party has scheduled a demonstration for 27 September to press authorities for his release.

Since his removal from office in April 2022 via a parliamentary no-confidence vote, Khan has been implicated in numerous legal proceedings.
