Has former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan been “killed” in jail? Rumours of his death are circulating on social media after Imran Khan's sisters were allegedly assaulted by police while seeking a meeting with him at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where Khan has been imprisoned for over two years on multiple cases, including corruption. He is currently serving his sentence.
The unverified claims of Khan’s death gained traction after an account on X named Afghanistan Times alleged on November 26 that the 72-year-old had been “mysteriously killed” and his “body moved out of the prison.” A follow-up post suggested that thousands of PTI supporters were attempting to “break into” Adiala Jail to learn about their leader’s condition.
Another viral photo purportedly showed Khan on a stretcher, with claims linking his death to Field Marshal Asim Munir and Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), though none of these reports have been independently verified.
Meanwhile, Khan’s sisters, Noreen Niazi, Aleema Khan, and Dr. Uzma Khan, accused police of brutally assaulting them while they peacefully protested outside the jail. Noreen described being dragged across the road and sustaining visible injuries.
“At the age of 71, I was seized by my hair, thrown violently to the ground, and dragged across the road, sustaining visible injuries,” Noreen Niazi said.
Thousands of PTI supporters also gathered outside the jail, raising slogans against Khan’s detention. Noreen condemned the police actions as “wholly criminal, illegal, morally reprehensible, and in direct contradiction to the foundational duties of any law enforcement agency in a democratic society.”
The sisters’ attempt to meet Khan comes amid a month-long ban on visits to him, which has also affected political figures such as Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
