Hannah Kobayashi, a 30-year-old from Maui, Hawaii, is a gifted and renowned photographer celebrated for her intricate mandala and geometric designs. Her art was followed by a large audience on Instagram, where she shared her work with thousands of followers. Hannah stood out for her creativity, with her unique style and sharp visuals earning her a reputation as a talented artist. Standing 5 feet 10 inches tall, with brown hair, hazel eyes, and a distinctive knife tattoo on her forearm, Hannah's artistic flair was matched by her vibrant personality and zest for storytelling through photography.

Hannah was preparing for a personal milestone—what she described as a “bucket list” trip to New York City. Her plans were to visit her aunt in upstate New York and attend a Brooklyn event on November 13, capturing new sights through her camera lens. This trip marked both professional and personal excitement for the young artist, but it would soon take an unexpected turn.

The Disappearance

Hannah’s journey became shrouded in mystery on November 8, when she missed her connecting flight at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) while en route to New York. Surveillance footage, later reviewed by the police, shows her movements in the days after her missed flight.

On November 9, Hannah was spotted at the famous Taschen bookstore and then at a Nike store event on November 10. These casual visits indicated her exploration of Los Angeles as part of her brief stopover. Surveillance from November 11 showed her boarding a Metro train with an unidentified man and exiting at Pico Station. The man reportedly met Kobayashi near the LAX train station around 9 pm and agreed to assist her in locating Union Station, a major transportation hub in downtown Los Angeles.

He described Hannah as a “free spirit” and explained that they spent time together, sharing a meal and speaking deeply about her life in Maui and her personal experiences. They fell asleep in the waiting area at Union Station that night before Hannah left early the following morning.

Hannah’s path took another strange turn on November 12, when she purchased a bus ticket and made her way to the United States-Mexico border. She is reported to have crossed the border on foot into Tijuana alone while leaving her phone behind. Her choice to sever contact with her family and take this sudden journey has led law enforcement to label her as a “voluntary missing person.” Despite this, Hannah’s family strongly disputes this conclusion, arguing that her actions defy her known personality and choices.

Cryptic messages

Before her disappearance, Hannah sent a series of cryptic and alarming text messages to her family. One of the most disturbing messages mentioned that she had experienced a “spiritual awakening,” while another referenced being targeted by “deep hackers” who allegedly wiped her funds, stole her identity, and manipulated her mind.

These statements added a layer of complexity to the situation, leading her family to question whether her disappearance was truly voluntary. Hannah's mother discovered documents pointing toward a possible connection with a green card fraud scheme, involving a man from Argentina and his girlfriend. Her family suspects this may have entangled her in financial manipulation or coercion, leading to her current state.

The search for Hannah became even more devastating when her father, Ryan Kobayashi, was found dead in a Los Angeles parking lot on November 24. His death, ruled a suicide, came as he had flown from Hawaii to help search for his daughter.

Compounding the emotional toll are internal family tensions. Hannah’s sister, Sydni, has openly criticized her aunt, Larie Pidgeon, for allegedly prioritizing media attention and fundraising efforts through GoFundMe rather than focusing on the search for Hannah. Pidgeon later announced her plans to travel to Mexico independently to continue the search, emphasizing the urgency of verifying whether Hannah is safe and truly acting of her own volition.

Where the investigation stands?

The LAPD has officially classified Hannah as a voluntary missing person. Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed that Hannah appeared unharmed in surveillance footage as she crossed the border. McDonnell emphasized that the investigation will remain active until Hannah contacts her family or law enforcement to confirm her safety.

However, the family is far from satisfied with this conclusion. Sydni, Hannah’s sister, remains vocal about her frustrations and skepticism, expressing concerns about Hannah's mental state, cryptic messages, and unexplained behaviours leading up to her disappearance.

Experts in missing persons’ cases suggest that voluntarily going missing without prior evidence of foul play is rare. Yet, the reports, cryptic text messages, and references to a green card fraud scheme have added complexity to the investigation.
