In what is being seen as the United Kingdom’s first visible military strike in the ongoing conflict, a Royal Air Force fighter jet has reportedly shot down an Iranian drone heading towards Qatar.

The UK’s Ministry of Defence said an RAF Typhoon operating from Qatar intercepted and destroyed the drone as it approached Qatari airspace. The aircraft was flying a defensive air patrol when it launched an air-to-air missile, successfully neutralising the threat.

According to the Ministry, the incident took place on March 1, 2026. The Typhoon was operating as part of the joint UK-Qatar Typhoon Squadron based in the Gulf. A squadron of Typhoons had been deployed to Qatar earlier this year amid rising regional tensions.

The downing of the drone is believed to mark the first time a UK fighter jet has shot down an Iranian drone since the United States and Israel carried out strikes on Iran on Saturday, triggering retaliatory action from Tehran.

In a statement, the Defence Ministry said the action ensured the security of Qatar’s airspace and protected British interests in the region. It added that the UK’s Armed Forces were playing a crucial role in safeguarding the country’s people, interests and allies.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said on Saturday that RAF jets were already “in the sky” to help defend allies in the Middle East against Iran’s response, signalling Britain’s active involvement as the conflict widens.
