As Cuba battles its worst economic crisis in decades, Fidel Castro’s grandson, Sandro Castro, is igniting fury online by parading a life of luxury on social media—an image worlds apart from the revolutionary ideals once preached by his grandfather.

With over 1.2 lakh Instagram followers, the 33-year-old is often seen speeding through Havana in luxury cars, throwing lavish yacht parties stocked with Cristal beer, and hosting elite soirées at his upscale EFE Bar. In a controversial recent post, Sandro appeared to mock Havana’s punishing 20-hour blackouts—conditions faced daily by ordinary Cubans.

“Cristal is medicine that must never be missing from my bar,” he declared in one clip—while food, fuel, and even medicine remain scarce for millions.

Sandro Castro is the son of Alexis Castro Soto del Valle, one of Fidel’s five sons. Raised in the exclusive Punto Cero neighborhood, Sandro’s gilded upbringing stands in sharp contrast to the hardship endured by most Cubans today. While the average Cuban survives on just $16.50 a month, Sandro vacations at resorts like El Patrón, which charge nearly $100 a night.

A Reuters report in July revealed that Cuba has lost 30% of its foreign currency revenue, driving inflation and leading to empty shelves, fuel lines, and medical crises across the island. Against this grim backdrop, Sandro’s private parties—where table bookings reportedly cost up to 15,000 Cuban Pesos—have triggered outrage, with many accusing him of mocking the suffering of his fellow citizens.

This isn’t Sandro’s first brush with controversy. In 2021, he went viral for joyriding in a Mercedes-Benz during the height of the pandemic, later claiming it belonged to a friend.

Once a symbol of revolutionary sacrifice, the Castro name is now being dragged into debates about privilege, inequality, and betrayal of legacy—all thanks to one man’s Instagram feed that feels more Miami than Havana.
