Washington: Donald Trump said on Monday that Washington would "not put up with" Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s rhetoric much longer. His remarks came as the US president prepared to meet his top advisors following a contentious Oval Office exchange with the Ukrainian leader.
"This is the worst statement that could have been made by Zelensky, and America will not put up with it for much longer," Trump wrote on social media. He was reacting to Zelensky’s comments, in which the Ukrainian president suggested that the war with Moscow would not end soon.
Trump accused Zelensky of prolonging the conflict for continued American support, saying, "This guy doesn't want there to be Peace as long as he has America's backing."
He also criticised European leaders who held crisis talks with Zelensky in London over the weekend, claiming they admitted their reliance on the US. "Probably not a great statement to have been made in terms of a show of strength against Russia. What are they thinking," he posted on his Truth Social platform.
Heated White House meeting leads to fallout
Tensions escalated after a meeting at the White House on Friday between Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Zelensky. The discussion turned confrontational, with Trump and Vance accusing Zelensky of being ungrateful for US military aid while the Ukrainian leader pressed for security guarantees.
The exchange reportedly grew heated, with raised voices, leading to Zelensky being asked to leave the White House. A key agreement granting Washington preferential access to Ukraine’s mineral resources was left unsigned.
Trump considers next steps on Ukraine
Following the dispute, Trump convened a meeting with his senior advisors on Monday to discuss future policy on Ukraine, according to US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.
White House officials declined to confirm a report by Axios suggesting Trump was contemplating cutting all military aid to Kyiv.
Meanwhile, European leaders, who have proposed deploying peacekeepers to secure any potential ceasefire while seeking a US role in backing such efforts, met in London on Sunday to address the crisis.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy by phone on Monday to discuss the London talks. According to State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce, Rubio "confirmed the United States is ready to negotiate to end the Ukraine-Russia conflict and will continue working with the UK towards peace in Ukraine."
