Gaza Strip: The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry reported on Sunday that the death toll in the Palestinian territory has exceeded 50,021 since the conflict with Israel began on 7 October 2023. The ministry also stated that 113,274 individuals have been wounded since the conflict's onset.

Hamas launched the attack on Israel on 7 October, which Israel cites as the catalyst for the ongoing conflict. According to Israeli figures, the initial Hamas assault resulted in 1,218 deaths, predominantly civilians.

Gaza’s civil defence agency corroborated the health ministry’s figures, reporting over 50,000 fatalities. AFP and other international agencies have been unable to independently verify these numbers. However, the United Nations has described the health ministry's figures as reliable.

The death toll sharply increased following the collapse of a ceasefire that had been in place since 19 January. Since the ceasefire broke down, Israel has conducted extensive airstrikes across Gaza and renewed its ground offensive.

In the past 24 hours alone, the Health Ministry reported 39 deaths, bringing the total fatalities since Israel resumed military operations on Tuesday to 673.

A study published in The Lancet in January estimated that Gaza’s actual death toll during the first nine months of conflict was approximately 40% higher than official Gaza Health Ministry figures.

The latest death toll also includes 233 individuals who were previously listed as missing but whose deaths have now been confirmed.
