In a significant development for global aviation, China has lifted its month-long ban on Boeing aircraft deliveries following a recent trade agreement with the United States, Bloomberg reports, citing sources. The move comes after both nations agreed to temporarily reduce tariffs, signalling a potential thaw in their ongoing trade tensions.
Under the new agreement, the United States has reduced tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, while China has lowered its tariffs on US imports from 125% to 10%. This 90-day pause in escalating tariffs aims to provide a window for further negotiations and stabilisation of trade relations.
Chinese aviation authorities have informed domestic airlines and relevant government agencies that they may resume accepting deliveries of US-made Boeing aircraft, people said, asking not to be identified due to confidentiality. Airlines have been granted the discretion to organise deliveries according to their own schedules and terms.
The ban, imposed in April, had halted the delivery of approximately 50 Boeing jets scheduled for Chinese carriers in 2025, including several 737 MAX and 777 freighter models. Some of these aircraft had already been manufactured and were awaiting delivery. During the suspension, Boeing explored alternative markets, with interest reportedly coming from airlines in India, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia.
China represents a significant market for Boeing, accounting for about 10% of its commercial aircraft backlog. The resumption of deliveries is expected to provide a substantial boost to the company's operations and financial performance. Boeing's stock has responded positively to the news, reflecting investor optimism about the company's prospects in the Chinese market.
While the lifting of the ban marks a positive step, analysts caution that the relief may be temporary if the underlying trade disputes are not resolved within the 90-day negotiation period. Both governments have expressed a commitment to achieving a sustainable and mutually beneficial trade relationship, but significant challenges remain.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China and Boeing have not issued official statements regarding the resumption of deliveries. However, the decision is widely seen as a constructive move towards normalising trade and aviation ties between the two countries.
As the global aviation industry continues to recover from recent disruptions, the resumption of Boeing deliveries to China is a welcome development, offering hope for increased cooperation and stability in international trade relations.
