Beirut: The heart of Lebanon’s capital faced a night of catastrophic destruction on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, as Israeli airstrikes levelled a residential complex in Bashoura and left at least 12 people dead in neighbouring districts. The escalation marks a deadly shift in the urban conflict, with the Lebanese Health Ministry confirming that the fatalities were concentrated in areas hit without prior notice.

The day’s most dramatic structural failure was captured on video in the Bashoura district. A 10-story building, which had already been damaged in a previous strike, was hit again by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Footage shows the massive structure pancaking in seconds.

Why is the Beirut death toll rising so rapidly?

The Lebanese Health Ministry has confirmed that the death toll of 12 is primarily tied to "no-warning" strikes in the central neighbourhoods of Basta and Zuqaq al-Blat. Unlike the Bashoura operation, these raids targeted densely populated apartment blocks while residents were still inside.

In Zuqaq al-Blat, the National News Agency (NNA) confirmed that Mohammad Sherri, the director of political programs for Hezbollah’s Al Manar TV, was killed alongside his wife. His children and grandchildren were also wounded in the strike. In the Basta district, first responders described a gruesome scene where the walls of two adjacent floors were entirely blasted off, requiring DNA testing to identify the victims recovered from the site.

What is the current humanitarian situation in Lebanon?

The humanitarian crisis has reached a breaking point, with authorities reporting that 912 people have been killed in Lebanon since the conflict ignited on March 2.

In the coastal city of Sidon, an Israeli strike hit a vehicle near the main seaside road, where many displaced people are staying and sleeping in their cars, according to an AFP correspondent.

The violence has also expanded to the south, where the ancient port city of Tyre remains under a forceful IDF evacuation order.

These strikes coincide with Israel's "campaign of decapitation" against the Iranian leadership, following the confirmed deaths of Iranian Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib and security chief Ali Larijani earlier this week.
