Italy: Two celebrated Barbie designers, Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi, were killed in a devastating car crash on a highway in northern Italy on Sunday. The couple, who were also partners in real life, lost their lives in a head-on collision caused by an elderly driver travelling the wrong way.

The accident occurred on the A4 Turin-Milan highway when 82-year-old Egidio Ceriano, after reportedly missing a toll booth, made a U-turn and drove in the opposite direction for over four miles at speeds exceeding 80 mph.

The fatal crash involved Paglino and Grossi’s vehicle, which was also carrying Amodio Valerio Giurni, a bank employee, and his wife Silvia Moramacro. Mr Giurni died at the scene, while Ms Moramacro was taken to hospital in critical condition. The elderly driver, Mr Ceriano, also died in the crash.

Following the tragic news, Barbie’s official Instagram account posted a heartfelt tribute to the designers, who were known for their influential work and dedication to the Barbie brand.

"The Barbie team is heartbroken by the loss of Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi, two treasured creators and Mattel collaborators who brought joy and artistry to the world of Barbie as Magnia2000," the post read.

The message went on to honour their contributions, "As passionate and talented designers and lifelong collectors, their spirit and love for the brand turned every creation they touched into a masterpiece. Beyond their remarkable talent, they shared an energy that lit up every space they entered."

"Whether leading the Italian Doll Convention in Milan or showcasing their talents and love for Barbie at doll shows all over the world, their presence brought warmth, laughter and a sense of belonging," it added.

A legacy in dolls

Paglino and Grossi founded Magnia2000, a company focused on creating custom dolls, in 1999. Their work in the world of fashion dolls earned them the Barbie Best Friend Award in 2016, presented by Barbie fashion designer Carol Spencer.

Known for their detailed celebrity dolls, their creations included famous faces such as Victoria Beckham, Cher, Lady Gaga, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Sophia Loren. The two were reportedly headed for a day out at the lake when the crash happened.
