Cairo: The Arab League’s General Secretariat announced Saturday that it will hold an emergency session of the Arab League Council on Sunday to address the diplomatic fallout following Israel’s official recognition of "Somaliland."

The meeting, scheduled at the level of permanent representatives, was convened at the urgent request of the Somali government. According to a statement from the Cairo-based organisation, the gathering is intended to "reaffirm the Arab categorical rejection of any unilateral measures or decisions that undermine Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity."

In its Saturday announcement, the League emphasised that the session would also focus on the necessity of adhering to international humanitarian law, as well as existing resolutions from both the Arab League and the African Union regarding the region.

The emergency talks are aimed at demonstrating "full solidarity with Somalia" and providing diplomatic support to its legitimate state institutions. Officials noted that the objective is to prevent the destabilisation of the Horn of Africa and maintain security throughout the broader region.

The move comes after Israel became the first country to formally recognise the breakaway region of Somaliland as an independent state, a decision that Mogadishu has condemned as a violation of its national borders.
