
Kabul: A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Afghanistan early on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at 5:20 AM local time (UTC+4:30). According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the epicenter was located 34 km northwest of Herat, at a depth of 10 km.
This region has experienced seismic activity recently, including a series of earthquakes in October 2023 that resulted in significant casualties and damage . As of now, there are no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage from the latest tremor.
Herat, Afghanistan's third-largest city with a population exceeding 272,000, is located near the epicenter. The area remains on high alert due to its vulnerability to aftershocks and potential infrastructure challenges.
