Kozhikode: Complaints have surfaced regarding delays in pensions distributed by the Kerala Pravasi Welfare Board (KPWB) to expatriates. Pensions, which were previously credited on the 5th of every month, have reportedly been delayed in recent months. Even though the payout date was later shifted to the end of the month, November’s pension had still not been disbursed by the start of the New Year. While the Board claims October pensions were credited at the end of November, many beneficiaries report not receiving the funds in their bank accounts.

Pensions are provided to members of the Kerala Pravasi Welfare Board who have contributed for more than five consecutive years and are above 60 years of age. Currently, out of 7,90,000 members under the scheme, 83,811 receive pensions. Expatriates outside India contribute ₹350 per month, while returnees and inter-state expatriates in India contribute ₹200. The minimum pension is ₹3,500 for expatriates and ₹3,000 for returnees. Additional pensions are also provided to those with contributions exceeding five years.

Due to the suspension of contribution collection for members above 60, some may exit the scheme. The Board also provides other benefits such as family pensions, disability pensions, medical assistance, marriage support, educational benefits, maternity support, death benefits for dependents and housing loan subsidies. Many applications for these benefits reportedly take months to process, according to Hanif Mooniyoor, state president of the Pravasi League.

The Board currently has no pending pension arrears. Pensions due for December are expected to reach beneficiaries’ accounts within two days.

Chairman Gafur P Lillies stated that despite expenditures exceeding revenue, the Board continues operations with government grants and allegations of mismanagement are politically motivated. He urged that the government grant be increased urgently to ensure the sustainability of the welfare programme.
