In a major acquisition, Wipro Consumer Care & Lighting, a subsidiary of  Wipro Limited, will acquire Nirapara, a popular brand of rice and spice powders in Kerala. Wipro will formally announce the acquisition in the coming days.

A few years back, Wipro similarly acquired Kerala-based popular soap brand 'Chandrika'. Meanwhile, it is learned that the brand name 'Nirapara' will likely to continue even after the acquisition.

Nirapara came into being when KK Karnan, a businessman, established KKR Group as a small-scale rice mill factory in Kalady in the year 1976. He later expanded this venture into a modern rice processing mill and registered the brand name, Nirapara. Rice varieties, spice powders, ready-to-eat and other food products manufactured by the company were all brought under one name, making Nirapara a food brand in South India.

Nirapara was later expanded to foreign countries under the leadership of Biju Karnan, son of KK Karanan. Actor Mohanlal and Manju Warrier were previously the brand ambassadors of Nirapara.

The company faced a setback in the last three or four years despite recording a turnover of Rs 400 crore in the 2017-18 FY. As a result, they lost their monopoly in the market and had to take cost-cutting measures.
