With only days left to file income tax returns, taxpayers are facing many challenges due to technical glitches in the e-filing portal.

Issues are encountered throughout the filing process, ranging from an inability to change passwords, mismatches in pre-filled information in ITR forms, and difficulties in e-verification.

Despite these hurdles, the tax department is continuously sending SMSes and e-mails urging taxpayers to file their returns by July 31. Associations of chartered accountants have requested the tax department to quickly resolve these issues.

The problems begin with the user trying to log into the e-filing portal. Furthermore, it is alleged that the site often hangs, forcing the users to start the process once again from the beginning.

Meanwhile, the inconsistencies in the pre-filled data on the Income Tax Portal have created confusion among taxpayers, with Form 26 showing significant differences between the data available on AAS and AIS.

Submission of feedback responses to AIS and TIS is also being hampered. Another major issue is the inability to change passwords and users not receiving OTPs on their phones.

Error messages frequently appear while submitting returns. There are also complaints about difficulties in e-verification due to non-receipt of OTPs. The reduction of the time limit for e-verification to 30 days has further complicated matters for taxpayers.

Most taxpayers, particularly salaried individuals who receive Form 16 from their employers in late June, become active in July to file their income tax returns.

In previous years, reports of technical glitches have caused delays in tax filing and have even prevented some users from submitting their returns.

Meanwhile, the Income Tax Department has said that it would address the issue, though the timeline for resolution remains uncertain. People have turned to social media platforms to voice their grievances about filing their income tax returns.
