Thiruvananthapuram: In a move to accelerate urban development, Kerala’s Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal unveiled the state’s plans for the financial year 2025-26 during his budget presentation on Friday. A key budget highlight was the formation of Metropolitan Planning Committees (MPCs) for the cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode. These committees will play a crucial role in the structured development of these metropolitan areas as part of Kerala's broader push to accelerate urbanisation.

Minister Balagopal emphasised that the state is committed to making strides in transportation infrastructure, with a major focus on metro rail systems in the state. He revealed that the long-anticipated Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail will begin operations in the 2025-26 fiscal year. This development is expected to transform the public transport in the capital city and ease the growing traffic congestion.

The minister also highlighted that ₹259 crore will be allocated for Kochi's metro development, which will see an accelerated pace in the coming years. Balagopal further noted that the state would explore the possibility of introducing metro rail systems in Kozhikode as well, aiming to modernise and streamline urban mobility across Kerala.

Railway plans:

In line with this ambitious vision for urban development, the state will also prioritise high-speed rail projects. This initiative aims to improve connectivity between cities, reduce travel time, and boost economic activity in the state. Metropolitan Planning Committees will be integral to managing these projects.

Additionally, Balagopal provided some positive economic news, stating that the most intense phase of the financial crisis faced by the state is over.
