Reliance Jio is marking its first decade with a major technology push, with the telecom company targeting a home-grown 6G ecosystem by 2030 while its network now serves 524 million customers and carries about 240 exabytes of data annually.

As Reliance Jio marks its tenth anniversary, the telecom giant is executing a major strategic pivot, positioning itself not merely as an infrastructure operator, but as an independent global technology creator. Internal technical briefings reveal that Jio has set an aggressive target to pioneer 6G technology by 2030, aiming to establish itself as a global "early mover" using entirely proprietary capabilities to set global telecom standards.
This 6G blueprint represents a high-stakes evolution of Jio's controversial 5G deployment strategy. Company documents acknowledge that Jio is currently 2 to 3 years behind the world in deploying standard 5G. However, this delay was a deliberate trade-off: rather than purchasing off-the-shelf vendor equipment, Jio invested those years in building its own native core and end-to-end stack.
This proprietary foundation is now being leveraged as the springboard for its 6G ambitions.
The R&D Engine: Patents and tech talent
To transition from a domestic service provider to a global standards-setter, Jio has built a massive intellectual property and research apparatus. As of March 2026, the company has filed 6,817 patents. This research pipeline is driven by an in-house Engineering and Technology team of 11,303 members.
This technical workforce is supported by a robust physical footprint. Nationally, Jio’s infrastructure includes:
* Over 360,000 installed towers
* A fiber backhaul and backbone network spanning more than 30 million km.
* A total of 4.93 lakh active network sites, split between 3.05 lakh 4G sites and 1.88 lakh 5G sites.
Despite building its own core, Jio still managed to onboard 260 million 5G customers within just 42 months of its next-gen rollout. This upcoming 6G push is funded and validated by the unprecedented scale of Jio's first decade in business.
At a network operations briefing marking the 10th anniversary, Sunil Dutt, President-Devices and Sales (Sales & Distribution) at Reliance Jio, noted that the company has successfully transitioned India from a "data-scarce" to a "data-abundant" nation.
A decade of digital transformation
The financial engine behind this scale is substantial. Cumulative financial data shows that Jio’s Large Scale Operations (LSO) generated Rs 146,885 crore in revenue over its first ten years, yielding a cumulative EBITDA of Rs 76,255 Crore between 2017 and 2026.
Moving forward, the company is looking to expand this revenue base by targeting 30+ million homes and 75+ million business premises with fixed-line and enterprise services.
India's OTT (Over-the-Top) entertainment market experienced explosive growth over the decade, with total users surging from 30 million in FY16 to 295 million in FY19, and ultimately reaching 601 million by FY26. Jio’s network infrastructure now routes an unprecedented 240 Exabytes of data annually.
Jio boasts a total customer base of 524 million, supported by 361.6 million monthly active users. Jio subscribers average an intensive 42.3 GB of data consumption per capita.
Highlighting the scale of its digital media reach, Jio registered a peak of 199 million viewers who streamed the IPL 2026 tournament via Jio Hotstar, backed by a broader network ecosystem of 337 million monthly OTT subscriptions.
Regional Dynamics: The Kerala circle
This national trajectory is mirrored in regional markets like Kerala, where Jio's entry triggered intense market consolidation. From a starting base of 5.8 lakh connections at its local launch in September 2016, Jio’s subscriber count in the Kerala circle grew to 111.9 lakh by mid-2026, representing an annual growth rate of 35.5%.
Jio now holds a 26.2% market share of Kerala's 427.5 lakh wireless connections, securing the second position in the circle. The local competitive landscape has consolidated from over eight active operators in 2016 to just four major players today:
* Vodafone Idea (Vi): Remains the market leader in active monthly subscribers in Kerala, despite its base contracting from 183.4 lakh to 127.9 lakh over the decade.
* Reliance Jio: Overtook Bharti Airtel in November 2017 to secure the second spot, now standing at 111.9 lakh subscribers.
* Bharti Airtel: Grew at a modest 8.4% rate over the ten-year period, reaching 97.9 lakh subscribers.
* BSNL: Holds fourth place with 89.8 lakh active users.
The overall Kerala telecom market expanded by 20.1% during this decade, growing from 356 lakh to 427.5 lakh total connections, proving that Jio expanded the market footprint rather than merely poaching rivals' customers.
Traffic profiles and device ecosystem
Nationally, Jio's network now routes a staggering 240 Exabytes of data annually, catering to 524 million customers, of which 361.6 million are active monthly.
This massive volume of traffic is dominated by video-centric applications and social media platforms. A massive portion of network traffic is driven by three major global tech giants, with Meta commanding 43.0% of direct peer traffic, followed by Google at 33.0% and Amazon at 14.0%. Akamai (3.0%) and Cloudflare (2.0%) make up the remainder of direct peering traffic.
YouTube dominates application traffic at 27.5%, followed closely by Instagram (22.7%) and Facebook (18.5%). Google Services (4.5%), WhatsApp (3.8%), Snapchat (0.9%), and ShareChat (0.8%) account for the remaining top applications.
To deliver content smoothly, local cache storage is heavily allocated to Google at 42% and Meta at 41%, followed by Video (VDO) caches at 9%, Akamai at 6.0%, and Amazon at 1.0%.
Hardware penetration is highly fragmented and dominated by cost-effective brands, led by Vivo (23%) and Xiaomi (15.8%). Oppo (13.2%), Realme (11.8%), and Samsung (11.8%) hold significant shares, while premium brands like Apple (4.7%) and OnePlus (3.5%) remain niche. Jio's entry-tier JioPhone represents 3.9% of the active device ecosystem.
