Mumbai: Petrol, diesel, and domestic LPG prices remained unchanged across India on Tuesday, offering no immediate relief to consumers grappling with elevated fuel costs. Oil marketing companies kept retail fuel rates steady, in line with recent trends, despite fluctuations in international crude oil prices.

Petrol and diesel rates in Mumbai today

In Mumbai, petrol continued to be sold at ₹103.54 per litre on January 20, the same price as Monday, January 19. Diesel prices in the city also remained unchanged at ₹90.03 per litre. Fuel prices differ across states and cities due to variations in value-added tax (VAT), local levies, and transportation costs.

Diesel prices were also steady at ₹90.03 per litre, reflecting no day-on-day change. Petrol prices, however, continue to remain above the ₹100 mark in several metropolitan cities, including Mumbai.

Daily fuel price revision mechanism

Petrol and diesel prices in India are revised daily by oil marketing companies based on global crude oil benchmarks and foreign exchange rates.

These revisions come into effect at 6 am every day. While international oil prices and geopolitical developments influence the base cost, central excise duty and state VAT account for a significant portion of the final retail price paid by consumers.

LPG prices unchanged

Domestic LPG prices also remained steady on Tuesday. In Mumbai, a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder continues to be priced at ₹853.50, unchanged from the previous day. LPG rates vary slightly across states due to differences in local taxes and transportation expenses.

Subsidy support for domestic LPG consumers

The Government of India continues to provide subsidies on domestic LPG cylinders to eligible households under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism.

The subsidy amount is credited directly to consumers’ bank accounts and is reviewed periodically. Officials have said that the subsidy is adjusted based on international LPG benchmark prices and currency exchange rate movements.

Outlook for consumers

With no revision announced on January 20, consumers in Mumbai and other major cities can expect fuel prices to remain stable in the near term, unless there is a sharp movement in global energy markets or a policy change by oil marketing companies.

Petrol and diesel prices are updated daily, and consumers are advised to check official oil company platforms for the latest city-wise rates.
