Kochi: Carborundum Universal Limited (CUMI), Kochi has begun industrial production of graphene in Kerala.
Graphene, the two-dimensional crystalline allotrope of carbon with enhanced properties has been considered a wonder material for multivarious reasons. It has exceptional electronic, mechanical and optical properties. Strength, better electrical/thermal conductivity, lightness and flexibility make it a ‘wonder material’ for many industrial purposes.
The graphene production comes under CUMI’s newly introduced ‘Grafino’ product range and a special plant has been set up at Kakkanad for this. Powders, intermediates, finished products and application support will be offered under it.
Industries Minister P Rajeeve termed the beginning of graphene production as a crucial step in the industrial development of the state.
CUMI is under the Tamil Nadu-based Murugappa Group.
