Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala cabinet on Friday cleared a dedicated graphene policy aimed at positioning the state as a major hub for research and production of the carbon-based advanced material, according to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The policy seeks to accelerate research, innovation and industrial applications of graphene and allied materials, with the government planning large-scale projects to harness the technology’s potential to transform multiple sectors.

Officials said the framework focuses on building a strong startup ecosystem, strengthening research and development, providing technical support, enabling global collaborations, and offering financial consultancy and marketing assistance to promote graphene-based enterprises.

The cabinet also approved the Kerala Advocates Welfare Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

The amendment raises the existing ceiling of Rs 10 lakh for termination-of-practice and post-death benefits to a maximum aggregate of Rs 20 lakh. It also doubles financial assistance for major surgeries and cancer treatment from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh, the statement added.
