Kozhikode: The protests organised by Youth Congress activists against the arrest of its state president, Rahul Mamkootathil, turned violent in several parts of the state.
Mamkootathil, who was earlier arrested in connection to a case registered over a protest march turning violent in Thiruvananthapuram, is currently placed in judicial custody till January 22.
However, on Tuesday, the state police recorded his arrest in three more protest-related cases. Later, the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court granted bail to him in two out of three cases.
Meanwhile, the Youth Congress has intensified its protest marches across the state. The march to the Collectorate in Kozhikode and the Municipality office in Adoor turned violent.
In Kozhikode, the police personnel resorted to using water cannons after protestors tried to remove the barricades placed in front of the Collectorate premise. After the protestors refused to disperse and hurled stones and sticks, the police resorted to using tear gas.
A section of activists also blocked the road in front of the collectorate and vandalised the posters of the left organisations.
In Adoor, a clash erupted between the cops and the protestors after the Youth Congress workers climbed over the barricades. Last day, a similar clash broke out between the activists and police personnel in Alappuzha, leading to Congress leadership criticising the state government for using police force to quell the protests.
