Kochi: Renowned writer KB Sreedevi passed away at her son’s residence in Thrippunithura on Tuesday. She was 84. She had been suffering from age-related ailments.
Sreedevi made literary contributions in the fields of story, novel, study, children's literature, and drama. Most of her works on Indian mythology and folklore come under the genre of children's literature.
She has published many novels and short stories through publications like Ezhuthachan Masika, Jayakeralam, and Mathrubhumi.
Her novel ‘Yaknjam’ (1974) bagged the Kunkumamam Award in 1975. She won the Amrithakeerthi award in 2018. Her grand daughter Ranjana K made her novel 'Yaknjam' into a forty five minute film with same title. Her story 'Shilpa Rupini' was translated into English by Gita Krishnankutty as Woman of Stone (1990). When her work 'Niramala' was made into a film, she did the screenplay also.
She received several awards including Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for vverall contributions and Kerala State Film Award for Story.
Sreedevi was born on May 1, 1940, in Vellakattu Mana in Vaniyambalam in present-day Malappuram district to VMC. Narayanan Bhattathippad and Gowri Antharjanam. She was educated at Thrippunithura Girls High School and Varavoor Government School.
She studied up to Xth class. Sreedevi studied music and Sanskrit also. Later she did higher studies in Sanskrit. She practiced Veena too.
She married Brahmadathan Namboodiripad. Her children are Unni, Latha, and Narayanan.
Sreedevi found a Mahila Samajam (group of women) aimed at the upliftment of women and children. The group organized education classes to make women literate, cultural activities for women, and job training for women. She lived in Thrissur for many years and later moved to Thrippunithura.
