Hariprasad personally prepares and serves each meal, with fish cooked in salt and turmeric forming the centrepiece of the offering

Cherai: While cats across the globe remained blissfully unaware of the occasion, a man in Cherai marked World Cat Day with an extraordinary celebration for his feline companions.
Hariprasad, hailing from Edavanakkad in Kerala, prepared a special sadhya (traditional Kerala feast) for the cats under his care--an annual tradition that has grown into a heartfelt homage to his lifelong love for animals.
Though daily meals are a routine at Harivihar’s cat dining hall, the feast on August 8th stood out for its grandeur. The enticing aroma of turmeric-seasoned fish and rice drew not just the resident cats, but also curious visitors from nearby. Hariprasad personally prepares and serves each meal, with fish cooked in salt and turmeric forming the centrepiece of the offering.
“Cats have always been a part of our household,” said Hariprasad. “My parents were devoted to them. They taught me to care for voiceless beings and raise them with affection.”
This love for animals is a family affair. His daughter, Dr Athmajadevi, who works at the District Veterinary Hospital, actively supports his passion. His wife Asha, a bank employee, also shares the same fondness for felines. At one point, their home was bustling with as many as 28 cats; now around ten of various colours remain.
Over the years, Hariprasad has developed a deep bond with his pets. “Their movements, cries, and sounds all carry meaning. I’ve learned to understand them with time,” he shared.
