Alappuzha: A complaint has been filed after 58-year-old Seena had two toes next to her big toe amputated without her or her family’s consent at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital. The incident involves her right foot, where she had sustained an injury.
Seena’s son, Siyyad, approached the hospital superintendent, prompting authorities to set up a three-member expert panel to investigate the matter.
Hospitalisation and surgery
Seena was admitted to the hospital’s surgical ward on September 27 with injuries to her right foot. She underwent surgery on September 29. According to the complaint, the toes were removed without obtaining prior consent from her or her family.

The family learned about the amputation on September 30, when senior doctors examined Seena after she continued to experience pain. Following this, Siyyad lodged his grievance with the hospital superintendent and the district medical officer.
Hospital response
Medical College Principal Dr B. Padmakumar said the amputation was medically necessary because of Seena’s severe diabetes. He stressed that consent should be obtained from patients or relatives before such procedures. The principal added that authorities will investigate any lapse in protocol and take immediate action once the expert panel submits its report.
