Iritty: The forest department has found that a wild jumbo which got electrocuted in Aralam farm rehabilitation area on Sunday had consumed wash kept for brewing illicit liquor.

The 30-year-old tusker was found dead on the backyard of resident Kalyani’s house in the 13th farm block. As per preliminary inspection, the elephant had consumed a large quantity of wash from the area.

According to the forest department, the wild jumbo had been residing in the inhabited area due to easy availability of wash. A total of four elephants were found dead in Aralam farm within the last two years.

Reportedly, there are numerous groups that brew illicit liquor from cashewnuts in the area. Complaints are rife about the increasing liquor use among women and children too.
