The legendary player questioned the values being promoted through such violent conduct, emphasizing the potential risks to players' lives and the negative message being sent to younger generations

The Sevens football scene in Kerala, is under increasing scrutiny due to a surge in on-field violence. This trend has sparked widespread concern among fans and former players, with many calling for immediate reforms to preserve the integrity of the sport.
Former Indian international Anas Edathodika has publicly condemned the escalating aggression in Sevens matches. In a heartfelt statement, he questioned the values being promoted through such violent conduct, emphasizing the potential risks to players' lives and the negative message being sent to younger generations.
“What kind of football are we endorsing when reckless aggression on the field puts lives at risk? If someone ends up losing their life or is left bedridden for the rest of the life, who takes responsibility? These are not just players — they are our brothers, our family. Through such acts of violence, what values are we passing on to the next generation? Is this the legacy we want to leave behind?
There is no point in imposing bans or taking action only after tragedy strikes. The time to act is now. The authorities overseeing Sevens football must urgently step in, before the game loses its soul.
Yes, speaking out may earn me criticism or enemies — but silence is no longer an option. This is not the football I played, nor the football I know and believe in,” wrote Anas.
Analysing the problem
A significant factor contributing to the issue is the leniency in disciplinary measures within Sevens football. Unlike standard football rules, where a red-carded player cannot be replaced, Sevens tournaments often allow for immediate substitutions, even after serious infractions. This lack of stringent penalties is seen by many as a tacit approval of misconduct, undermining the sport's discipline and fairness.
The growing concern is not unfounded. Reports indicate that football-related violence has led to severe injuries and even fatalities in recent months. Such incidents highlight the urgent need for regulatory bodies to enforce stricter rules and ensure the safety of players.
As Sevens football continues to be revered in Kerala, stakeholders are calling for immediate action to address these issues. Implementing stricter disciplinary measures and promoting a culture of respect and sportsmanship are essential steps toward preserving the essence of the game and protecting its players.
