Veteran Communist leader and former Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan has been awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour.

The Padma Awards, among the country’s most prestigious civilian honours, are announced annually on the eve of Republic Day. They recognise distinguished and exceptional service in a wide range of fields, including art, literature, science, medicine, social work, public affairs, sports and public service.

Achuthanandan has been recognised for his long-standing contribution to public life and public service.
