New Delhi: The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls commenced on Tuesday across nine states, including Kerala, and three union territories. This major voter roll update exercise follows Bihar and aims to ensure accuracy in the electoral database ahead of upcoming assembly elections.

Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will carry out door-to-door visits to verify voter details and collect necessary information using the enumeration form. The revision process will run until December 4, while the draft electoral roll is scheduled for release on December 9. Voters will have one month from the publication date to file objections or corrections.

According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), around 51 crore voters are covered under this phase of the SIR. The three-month-long process of verifying and updating the electoral rolls is expected to conclude by February 7, 2026.

Alongside Kerala, the revision is being carried out in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, and Goa. The union territories of Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep are also included.

The SIR is particularly significant for Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry, where assembly elections are due early next year. Assam, where elections are also expected, has been excluded from this round. The Election Commission stated that a separate order will be issued for the state, where citizenship verification is ongoing under Supreme Court supervision.

This marks the ninth Special Intensive Revision exercise conducted in India since Independence, with the last one held between 2002 and 2004.
