Violence against women remains high in Kerala; 1784 cases in Jan alone

Thiruvananthapuram: Despite Kerala launching several initiatives and public measures, the violence against women continues to increase in Kerala.

For instance, January 2023 alone recorded 1784 cases in the state, including 223 sexual assault cases, 629 incidents of insulting modesty of a woman, and 409 instances of facing sexual assault from family members.

The police records reveal that cases filed over violence against women increased from 16,199 in 2021 to 18,943 in 2022. Meanwhile, sexual assault cases have increased from 4059 to 5354. Additionally, 8 cases of dowry-related deaths were registered last year.

Violence against women remains high in Thiruvananthapuram district, with 1244 cases registered in 2022 and 1811 in 2021. Meanwhile, violence against minors remains a matter of concern, with 524 cases in January 2023 alone.
