From student politics and law practice to becoming one of Kerala’s most influential Congress leaders, VD Satheesan has built a strong political career over decades

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Thursday announced VD Satheesan as the new Chief Minister of Kerala, bringing an end to days of uncertainty, intense discussions and political power struggles.
VD Satheesan (born 31 May 1964) is a Congress stalwart who rose through the ranks with steady support from the people, becoming a determined face of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala politics.
A six-term Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Paravur constituency, Satheesan has emerged as a pivotal figure in Kerala's political landscape, most notably for leading his coalition to a historic landslide victory in the 2026 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections.

Early life and academic excellence
Born in Nettoor, Kochi, to K Damodara Menon and V Vilasini Amma, Satheesan’s journey is rooted in academic rigour and student activism. His educational background is extensive:
-
Primary education: Panangad High School.
-
Undergraduate studies: Sacred Heart College, Thevara.
-
Post-graduation: Master of Social Work (MSW) from Rajagiri College of Social Sciences.
-
Legal credentials: LLB from Kerala Law Academy and an LLM from Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram.
Before transitioning into full-time politics, Satheesan was a distinguished advocate, practising at the Kerala High Court for approximately a decade.

Rise through student politics
Satheesan’s political foundations were laid during his time as a student leader. He served as the Chairman of the Mahatma Gandhi University Union (1986–1987) representing the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and later climbed the national ranks as the Secretary of the National Students' Union (NSU).
Legislative career and Paravur stronghold
Though his electoral debut in 1996 in Paravur resulted in a loss, Satheesan returned in 2001 to claim the seat, which he has held with remarkable consistency ever since:
-
2001–2016: Consistently defeated candidates from the Communist Party of India (CPI), steadily increasing his influence and serving as the Chief Whip of the Indian National Congress during the 12th Assembly.
-
2021: Following the assembly elections, he was appointed Leader of the Opposition, succeeding Ramesh Chennithala.
-
2026: In a career-defining moment, he led the UDF to an absolute majority, winning 102 out of 140 seats. Individually, he won his sixth consecutive term in Paravur with a commanding margin of 20,600 votes against LDF’s E.T. Taison.

Parliamentary skill and social impact
Known as an exceptional orator, Satheesan is celebrated for his evidence-based interventions on the Assembly floor. His work extends beyond the legislature into active trade unionism, where he serves as president for numerous workers' associations in the Cochin industrial belt.
At the grassroots level, he is highly regarded for his dedication to his constituency, focusing on innovative projects in education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.
Awards and recognitions
Throughout his career, Satheesan has been frequently honoured by global and local organisations as a "Best Parliamentarian." Notable accolades include:
-
A.A. Rahim Memorial Award for Best Parliamentarian.
