Kochi: Uma Thomas MLA, who is recovering after falling 15 feet down on December 29, was shocked when her son Vishnu showed her the video of the accident at Kaloor International Stadium on his phone.
Uma Thomas does not remember anything about the accident itself but recalls the events leading up to it. After spending time in the intensive care unit, Uma Thomas was shifted to a room on Thursday afternoon as her health condition improved.
Using a walker with assistance, she managed to walk about 15 feet. Renai Medicity Medical Director Dr Krishnan Unni stated that she is expected to be discharged from the hospital in about a week.
The injuries to her head and lungs are healing. Visitors are not permitted at the moment.
MLA Uma Thomas sustained serious injuries after the fall at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium during a Guinness World Record attempt for a mass dance performance involving 12,500 participants on December 29. The event, organized by Mridanga Vision, had faced controversy over poor security measures and alleged procedural lapses in leasing the CPI(M)-controlled Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) stadium.
The accident occurred near the VIP pavilion after she greeted the state Culture Minister, Saji Cherian. She was admitted to a private hospital and placed on ventilator support, with doctors closely monitoring her rib injuries and recovery.
The incident sparked a blame game, leading to an investigation into the event’s organization and the arrest of three individuals who were later released on bail. The GCDA suspended a woman engineer for negligence, while the court has sought the event's brochure to examine its financial demands on participants.
Reports also revealed irregularities in leasing the stadium, initially reserved for football and allocated exclusively to the Kerala Blasters. Despite initial refusals, the decision was overturned with high-level intervention, expediting the approval process within days.
