Thiruvananthapuram: The UDF-led Opposition has stepped up its protest against granting permission for a brewery in Elappully, Palakkad. Opposition leader and Congress chieftain VD Satheesan asserted that a brewery would not be allowed in the area under any circumstances.
Satheesan alleged that Oasis Company, which is behind the project, entered through corrupt means and has a questionable background. He further claimed that the company has a history of groundwater contamination. "Elappully is a region facing severe drinking water scarcity. The Malampuzha Dam does not have sufficient water, and the brewery would require even more water than the Coca-Cola plant," he said.
CPI criticised for changing stance
Satheesan criticised the CPI, a key ally of ruling CPM in the LDF, for failing to take a stand on the issue. "Earlier, CPI leaders were summoned to the AKG Centre and humiliated. But now, the insult has taken place at the M N Smaraka building itself. CPI has turned into a party without a position. The Chief Minister has forced his decision upon the CPI at its own headquarters," he said.
Open to discussions with Chief Minister
Satheesan also expressed willingness for discussions with the Chief Minister. "Willing to participate in the discussion whenever and wherever the government decides. "It is the Chief Minister who is adamant about bringing in the brewery, so let the discussion be with him," he said.
