Kochi: The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) has been invoked against Ebin Paul, 32, a native of Kolenchery arrested in connection with the arson attack at a synagogue in Kochi. The investigation team has submitted a report to the Ernakulam magistrate court in this regard.

The incident occurred in the early hours of October 12, when Ebin Paul allegedly set fire to the nursery area in front of the synagogue. The subsequent investigation uncovered information about the accused's alleged links with groups abroad.

According to the investigation team, an examination of the accused's mobile phone revealed that he was a member of groups with alleged terror links operating overseas, as well as Telegram chats associated with them.

Sections 16 and 18 of the UAPA have been invoked against him. The charges relate to terrorist acts and conspiracy to commit such acts, including offences intended to spread fear among the public and promote enmity.

With the UAPA invoked, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is expected to take over the case. The NIA and other central agencies had been assisting the investigation team and gathering information from the initial stages of the probe.

The NIA is likely to formally take over the investigation in the coming days, according to reports.
