Thrissur: For the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Kerala, the historic 2024 victory of actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi in Thrissur was supposed to be the dawn of a new era. Instead, two years on, the "Suresh Gopi Effect" appears to have evaporated, leaving the party nursing a staggering loss of 2,00,000 votes.

The rise of a star

The 2024 General Election saw a seismic shift in Thrissur. Suresh Gopi did not merely win; he overturned a formidable 93,000-vote majority previously held by the UDF’s T.N. Prathapan, securing a mandate by over 74,000 votes. It was a masterclass in persistence; despite previous defeats, his perceived charisma and "man of the people" persona finally breached the traditional fortress of Kerala’s bipolar politics.

The turning tide

However, the ‘good times’ for the newly minted Union Minister were short-lived. Sources suggest that Suresh Gopi’s conduct in office quickly became a ‘liability’. A series of verbal gaffes and an increasingly abrasive public manner reportedly alienated not just the electorate, but his own party machinery.

The decline was marked by specific public relations setbacks. A grassroots initiative intended to charm rural voters—the so-called "Kalunk debate"—backfired following allegations that Suresh Gopi insulted an elderly constituent seeking assistance. Similarly, "SG Coffee Times," a bespoke campaign aimed at the middle-class intelligentsia, failed to gain traction, and was mocked by a revitalised Opposition.

A statistical collapse

The electoral data paints a grim picture for the NDA:

2024 (Lok Sabha): 5,55,007 votes (37.8% share) – The peak

2025 (Local Bodies): 3,96,808 votes – The slide

2026 (Assembly): 3,55,757 votes – The slump

By the time the 2026 Assembly elections concluded, the NDA’s footprint in the district had shrunk by nearly 2,00,000 votes compared to its 2024 high. What was once hailed as a personality-driven revolution has devolved into a cautionary tale. Reflecting the pattern, critics argue that in the sophisticated political landscape of Kerala, charisma can open the door, but temperament is what keeps you inside.
